PiraTour Travel is a family-owned company that, today, with over 20 years of experience, maintains the same spirit and commitment to environmental care and protection. Managed by a fourth-generation family of the region’s early settlers, it is the only company in Tierra del Fuego authorized to walk with penguins on Martillo Island.

It is important to note that, in order to obtain and maintain the necessary permits for this excursion, we work in direct partnership with the Southern Center for Scientific Research (C.A.D.I.C.).

Regarding the impact of the Martillo Island Trek on the penguins, it is interesting to point out that—contrary to what one might think—the colonies have actually grown since we began developing this activity. This curious fact is due to the Magellanic penguins using Martillo Island for breeding purposes. During this period, the penguins identify humans as a threat to their eggs; by taking extra care of them to protect them from “perceived” natural predators, they indirectly foster the colony’s growth.
